Bangkok → Chiang Mai → Luang Prabang → Vang Vieng fits two weeks well: big city, mountain town, slow-paced Laos and an adventure finish, without rushing.
Getting around cheaply
Take the overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai (second-class sleeper beds about 941–1,041 baht) and save a night's stay. From Chiang Mai, a flight to Luang Prabang costs about $118–$170 one way; the Laos train to Vang Vieng is about $5–$8.
Where to sleep
Hostel dorm beds start around $9 a night in Luang Prabang; budget a little more in Bangkok and for private rooms.
